What is AI, really?
20 Oct 2026
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer program that learns patterns from lots of examples, then uses those patterns to make a guess about something new.
A quick example
Imagine showing a friend 1,000 photos of cats and 1,000 photos of dogs. After a while, they can look at a new photo and say “that’s a cat!” AI learns in a similar way, just with far more examples.
You already use AI
- Your phone’s keyboard guesses the next word you’ll type.
- YouTube and Instagram guess which video you’ll want next.
- Maps apps guess how long the traffic will take.
The important part
AI makes guesses, not promises. It can be wrong, and it can sound very confident while being wrong. That’s why a good AI user always checks important answers.
